By the end of the nineteenth century, Chinese culture had fallen into a stasis, and intellectuals began to go abroad for new ideas. What emerged was an exciting musical genre that C. C. Liu terms "new music." With no direct ties to traditional Chinese music, "new music" reflects the compositional techniques and musical idioms of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century European styles. Liu traces the genesis and development of "new music" throughout the twentieth century, deftly examining the social and political forces that shaped "new music" and its uses by political activists and the government.

A Contemporary History of the Chinese Zheng traces the twentieth- and twenty-first-century development of an important Chinese musical instrument in greater China.The zheng was transformed over the course of the twentieth century, becoming a solo instrument with virtuosic capacity. In the past, the zheng had appeared in small instrumental ensembles and supplied improvised accompaniments to song. Zheng music became a means of nation-building and was eventually promoted as a marker of Chinese identity in Hong Kong. Ann L. Silverberg uses evidence from the greater China area to show how the narrative history of the zheng created on the mainland did not represent zheng music as it had been in the past. Silverberg ultimately argues that the zheng’s older repertory was poorly represented by efforts to collect and promote zheng music in the twentieth century. 在神經系統模擬的研究上，有尖峰響應模型(Spike Response Model)來描述多神經系統動力學，有霍吉金-赫胥黎模型(Hodgkin–Huxley model)來描述單神經元及離子通道開關的動態變化，有菲茨休-南雲模型(FitzHugh-Nagumo model)來分析神經元的狀態演化，卻沒有任何一個模型可以用來描述離子通道這個層次的動力學。 離子通道的動力學之所以重要，是因為影響整個神經傳遞最基本的因素就只有離子的變化而已。但是過去的模型都用電阻來模擬離子通道，因此無法探討微觀中每個離子的動力學。我們利用可控閘極電壓式單電子電晶體模型(Controllable gate voltage single-electron transistor model)來完整描述離子通道的行為。 在這個模型中，我們需要考慮時變的閘極電壓。因此我們以微擾理論給出閘極電壓與系統環境間耦合強度的關係。並利用非平衡格林函數(Non-Equilibrium Green's Function)給出系統的粒子數及電流隨時間的演化。 我們整合霍吉金-赫胥黎模型及可控閘極電壓式單電子電晶體模型做反向傳播(backpropagation)，提出一個新的神經系統模型。利用可控閘極電壓式單電子電晶體模型模擬單離子通道算出的電流，加上霍吉金-赫胥黎模型給出單神經中離子通道開啟的數量，可以得到膜電位的變化。再修正霍吉金-赫胥黎模型所得到的膜電位誤差，做多次反向傳播後誤差將會收斂。最後我們再加入尖峰響應模型，考慮其他神經元的訊號以及動作電位後的閥值修正，即可得到完整的神經系統模型。

This dissertation decomposes labor supply into three margins step by step and studies the relative effects of two adverse labor market institutes on labor supply. Labor supply in Europe declined about 30% relative to the US over the past 3 decades. The decline in labor supply comes from both hours worked per worker and employment. Some studies attributed the declining hours worked to higher labor taxes, while other studies accredited high unemployment rates in Europe to generous non-employment benefits. Fang and Rogerson (2009) is the only exception which incorporates two margins of labor supply. Fang and Rogerson (2009) embedded working hours into Pissarides matching model and found that higher labor taxes decrease both hours per worker and employment. The first essay of this dissertation starts from Fang and Rogerson (2009) to compares the relative effects of increases in labor taxes and non-employment benefits on hours per worker and employment and quantifies them.

This study examined the relationship between ethical leadership and multidimensional organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs), specifically organization-targeted OCBs (OCBO) and individual-targeted OCBs (OCBI). In addition, the study examined the multiple mediating effects of selfefficacy, respect, and leader-member exchange (LMX) on the relationship between ethical leadership and OCBO, as well as the relationship between ethical leadership and OCBI. Through the application of a hierarchical linear model, an analysis of the results from 656 dyadic supervisor- subordinate data from 145 business units in Taiwan showed that both respect and LMX significantly mediated the ethical leadership-OCBO and -OCBI relationships. The implications of these results for theory and practice and directions for future research are also discussed.

Most people suppose that the whole world knows what it is to love; that romantic love is universal, quintessentially human. Such a supposition has to be able to meet three challenges. It has to justify its underlying assumption that all cultures mean the same thing by the word ‘love’ regardless of language. It has to engage with the scholarly debate on whether or not romantic love was invented in Europe and is uniquely Western. And it must be able to explain why early twentieth-century Chinese writers claimed that they had never known true love, or love by modern Western standards. This study of Wong's filmmaking techniques uses a poetics approach to examine how form, music, narration, characterization, genre, and other artistic elements work together to produce certain effects on audiences. Bettinson argues that Wong's films are permeated by an aesthetic of sensuousness and "disturbance" achieved through techniques such as narrative interruptions, facial masking, opaque cuts, and other complex strategies.
