However, even though attachment is relevant to all cultures and humans of all ages, the majority of research has focused on middle class infants in Anglicized cultures. Further, the function of attachment to protect humans from danger has been overlooked in a focus on the advantages of safety and security. This volume, first published in 2000, presents a theory on attachment that broadens its range to ages beyond infancy, to many cultures and to endangered populations, including both psychopathological individuals and those living in threatening contexts. The intent is to provide new theory and methods to better understand human variation in interpersonal and cultural self-protective strategies. The expansion of the attachment classificatory system beyond its roots in infancy and to a broad range of cultures differentiates this volume from other work on attachment.

Women are still underrepresented as public-sector organizational leaders, despite comprising half of the United States public-sector workforce. To explore the factors driving gender imbalance, this Element employs a problem-driven approach to examine gender imbalance in local government management. We use multiple methods, inductive and deductive research, and different theoretical frames for exploring why so few women are city or county managers. Our interviews, resume analysis and secondary data analysis suggesting that women in local government management face a complex puzzle of gendered experiences, career paths and appointment circumstances that lend insights into gender imbalanced leadership in this domain.

Polar Lows which provides a comprehensive review of our understanding of the small, high-latitude weather systems known as polar lows. These often vigorous depressions are a hazard to maritime operations and high-latitude communities, yet have only been investigated in detail since the 1960s. In this volume the authors describe the climatological distribution of these lows, the observational investigations into their structure, their operational forecasting and the theoretical research into why they develop. They also discuss the experiments carried out with high-resolution numerical weather forecast models that have shown that some polar lows can be predicted a day or more in advance. Donald Francis McKenzie (1931–1999) was one of the foremost bibliographers of the twentieth century, and his contributions to the history of the book continue to exert great influence on the field. Early in his career, he made a detailed study of the archives of Cambridge University Press, focusing on the period 1696–1712. Descriptive set theory and definable proper forcing are two areas of set theory that developed quite independently of each other. This monograph unites them and explores the connections between them. Forcing is presented in terms of quotient algebras of various natural sigma-ideals on Polish spaces, and forcing properties in terms of Fubini-style properties or in terms of determined infinite games on Boolean algebras.
