This book delineates the history and politics of gender and sexuality since postwar Taiwan. Tracking the interface between queerness and national culture, it underscores the imbrications of male homosexuality, prostitution and feminism within the modernizing process and offers a trenchant critique of the violence of sexual modernity.

Given the rapid pace at which the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and other Asian economies are growing and the global volatility that these societies are experiencing, social capital and its diverse connectivities can furnish useful anchoring to communities, neighbourhoods, local governments and social protection networks. This volume in twelve chapters provides a critical analysis of social capital, its indigenous evolution and spread in HKSAR. Some of the experiments and activities narrated in these chapters indicate the ingenious blending of the local ethos and culture with modern organisational forms and information networks. Drawing upon a unique and untapped reservoir of newspapers, magazines, novels, government documents, photographs and illustrations, this book traces the origin, pinnacle, and ultimate demise of a commercial dance industry in Shanghai between the end of the First World War and the early years of the People's Republic of China. Delving deep into the world of cabarets, nightclubs, and elite ballrooms that arose in the city in the 1920s and peaked in the 1930s, the book assesses how and why Chinese society incorporated and transformed this westernized world of leisure and entertainment to suit its own tastes and interests. Focusing on the jazz-age nightlife of the city in its "golden age," the book examines issues of colonialism and modernity, urban space, sociability and sexuality, and modern Chinese national identity formation in a tumultuous era of war and revolution.

我國將配合聯合國（the United Nation）與亞太經濟合作組織（Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, APEC），於2008年全面實施化學品全球分類與標示制度（the Globally Harmon ized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals，GHS），是一個與國際化學品管理趨勢接軌重要的開始，然而我國在化學品登錄機制與管理應用方面的發展，卻較許多先進國家起步晚，聯合國國際化學品管理策略方針（Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management，SAICM）中，危害物質登錄管理機制將是國家完整化學品管理制度中不可或缺的一環，未來我國在推動完整化學品管理制度時，必需同時考量我國需求與國際發展趨勢。本研究計畫以蒐集美國、加拿大、日本、中國大陸及歐盟有關化學品管理相關指引與現行登錄機制，針對危害物質登錄管理之相關要點做分析比較，並與我國現有制度以及未來推行化學品全球調和制度、法規修訂方向之必要措施配合等，提出我國未來發展登錄機制之建議參考。本研究建議以我國現有的主管部會管理機制為基礎，透過跨部會協調分工機制（如勞工委員會為實施GHS制度推動跨部會協調機制），共同建立一國家既有的化學品清單，並優先於作業場所法規中，對於新化學物質進入工作場所，須進行通報等登錄機制。未來更擴大應用於其他主管部會法規中，以健全完備危害化學品登錄制度，提供國家整體化學品危害辨識、風險評估與相關法規建置與管理之重要依據，並與國際發展趨勢結合。

京都議定書已於2005年2月正式生效，我國雖非附件一國家，在第一階段尚無立即減量之壓力，但我國溫室氣體排放總量佔全球總排放量的1%，名列全球第廿二位，很可能被列入下一波要求減量的目標；再者，溫室氣體雖包括六種氣體，但是二氧化碳卻佔台灣溫室氣體排放總量七成五以上，這也是二氧化碳被列入減量重點之原因。就消極面而言，若不採行二氧化碳減量措施，我國恐將遭受貿易抵制，損及國家利益；另以積極面而言，我國身為地球村之一員，自應善盡世界公民之責任，共同為維護地球之永續發展而努力。因此，評估京都議定書對電力系統之可能衝擊與因應對策，實為當務之急。本文即利用Regional and Real-time Pricing System（RRPS）來模擬各種溫室氣體減量政策，包括碳稅及需求面管理對台電機組調度、電價及二氧化碳排放之影響。依據本文模擬結果，徵收40美元/噸CO2之碳稅無法降低燃煤機組之發電量，僅能在尖峰時段降低小部分燃油機組之發電，由燃氣機組取代，但會使電價由每度1.86元新台幣上漲至2.56元新台幣，漲幅約達38%；若將稅率提高為60美元/噸CO2，則燃氣取代燃油之效果更加明顯，但電價也將上漲為2.91元新台幣/度。在離峰時段則因為以核能與燃煤發電為主力，因此課徵之碳稅對機組調度與二氧化碳排放毫無影響，但因離峰時段節點電價低，相對碳稅將佔了電價中較高比例，因此課徵40美元/噸CO2之碳稅將使平均節點價格由每度0.46元新台幣暴增至1.53元新台幣。此外，當系統發電容量不足時，若能透過需求面管理的手段來抑制尖峰負載，是確保系統可靠度的一項良方，同時也能藉由減少發電能源使用而降低二氧化碳之排放。但是，若因實施負載管理措施而將尖峰用電移轉至離峰，則反而可能導致總二氧化碳排放增加的後果。

近年來，本港教育界大力提倡報告研習法（project-based learning）。高中的通識教育科，更將之列為公開評核項目之一。如眾所知，報告研習法的好處甚多，不但能培養學生的批判和分析能力，而且通過小型研究及資料搜集活動，可以訓練他們的自學能力、團隊合作精神，以及時間的有效分配。 報告研習法的好處固然甚多，不過對於中學同學來說，也是困難重重。從構思題目、文獻回顧、到選定研究方法、設計研究、乃至分析資料、撰寫報告等，都是新生事物，有數不盡的挑戰。加上課堂時間緊迫，有關教材缺乏，老師和學生所面對的困惑，不言可喻。 其實，如何進行及完成一個研究計劃，即使對於以研究社會為專業的社會學者來說，也不是輕而易舉之事。有鑑於此，香港中文大學社會學系編寫了這本《社會研究入門手冊》，介紹社會研究的基本步驟，並突出一些具體操作的問題及要訣，使同學在開展研究的時候有所依據。我們祈望本書能「拋磚引玉」，促使學術界、教育界賢達之士為中學的課程改革及新的教學法提供更多教材及支援。

The Sublime Object of Orientalism proposes that globalised Asian physical cultural practices such as taiji, qigong, yoga, and meditation can be understood by examining the intimate connection between Western orientalism and the Romantic aesthetic notion of the sublime. The book recasts ‘orientalist physical culture’ as practices animated by the sublime and argues that this relationship is stronger than has hitherto been recognised by commentators. Bowman combines new readings of philosophers and cultural critics such as Slavoj Žižek and Jane Iwamura with analyses of film, media, and Asian physical practices and their entrepreneurial forms to shed light on the quest to articulate a philosophy of orientalist physical culture. In The Heart Sūtra: Revisiting Its Texts, History, and Meaning, Henry C. H. Shiu investigates the historical origins of the Heart Sūtra, a significant Buddhist scripture. He compares the Sanskrit texts with their Chinese and Tibetan translations to analyse whether the Heart Sūtra might be a Chinese apocryphon, through detailed linguistic examination. To achieve this goal, Shiu thoroughly examines the primary sources from which the scripture was extracted. He emphasises the necessity of reading the Heart Sūtra in the larger context of the Perfection of Wisdom literature, which contains the essence of Mahāyāna Buddhist teaching. In this monograph, Shiu successfully transcends the boundaries between the Chinese, Indian and Tibetan Buddhist traditions and provides a revisionist interpretation of the Heart Sūtra.
