A facsimile edition of two probably unique, and undescribed before this books publication in 1969, early sixteenth-century Spanish verse chap-books, printed at Burgos and Salamanca between 1510 and 1520. Mr Norton and Professor Wilson provide a substantial introduction on their literary or bibliographical importance, and a supplementary checklist of Spanish chap-books before 1521. The first of the chap-books has four leaves, and gives important early printed forms of six ballad texts. The second has six leaves and is a nonsense poem. The first is interesting to students of folk-literature; both illustrate the survival of medieval topics and writing styles, and the mingling of oral and printed traditions in early sixteenth-century Spain.

Using archival materials and church charters from the province of Anjou, Paul Marchegay provides a broad and comprehensive picture of the history of this province of western France. In Volume 1, published in 1853, the Anjou native and archivist of the province makes use of three primary sources: the papers of the eighteenth-century politician Armand-Thomas Hue, seigneur de Miroménil, a report on the land ownership, economic resources and social conditions of the province made by the diplomat Charles Colbert de Croissy (younger brother of Loius XIV's minister of finance), and finally the medieval charters of Anjou. Volume 2, published in 1853, comprises charters from the abbey of Marmoutiers, near Tours, that give an insight into local life through centuries.

In the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, Coventry harboured a community of Lollards, adherents of medieval England's only popular heresy. The attention of philosophers. linguists and literary theorists has been converging on the diverse and intriguing phenomena of analogy of meaning:the different though related meanings of the same word, running from simple equivocation to paronymy, metaphor and figurative language. So far, however, their attempts at explanation have been piecemeal and inconclusive and no new and comprehensive theory of analogy has emerged. This is what James Ross offers here. The son of a printer and bookshop owner, Auguste Bernard (1811–1868) quit his studies at the age of seventeen to become a typographer at the Parisian printing house of Firmin Didot, before becoming an editor with the royal printer. Bernard spent his leisure time collecting documents on the history of the people and customs of the ancient province of Forez (roughly, the area of the Loire valley). He is best known for his histories of typography and printing in France and Europe, his most celebrated work being his biography of Geoffroy Tory, the first French royal printer. This book aims to cast light on the story behind this most enigmatic of manuscripts. Data are presented here that makes possible a reconstruction of the stages of copying from which the manuscript descends. An appraisal of the earliest correctors of the Codex enables the author to extend his picture of its history to the medieval period.
