This book is a novel modelled on Plato’s Republic as a series of dialogues between a half-retired college professor and his former student, taking place in several weeks in a row on various scenic and memorable locations in Hong Kong – in Central, on the Peak, on Repulse Bay and in Stanley on Hong Kong Island, as well as in Cheung Chau, an outlying island of Hong Kong. The story starts by the professor greeting and receiving his former student Julian to tea and for a friendly chat in the professors’ favourite old teahouse in Central. Their conversation, initially centring around the current events taking place in Hong Kong, soon evolves into an in-depth discussion of the immediate and subtler causes and factors leading to such a state of affairs that has been described by the local media and the Government as ‘public activities’. Since both the professor and Julian find their discussion and exchange very interesting and fruitful, they decide to continue with it in the weeks that follo

Collected and Curated introduces Chinese art and material culture through the items from the permanent collection of The University Museum and Art Gallery (UMAG), The University of Hong Kong. As the oldest continuously operating museum in Hong Kong, UMAG serves as a significant venue for contemporary art exhibitions, and excels at collecting, documenting and teaching about local and regional artists and art forms, while fostering ongoing and new relationships. Regarded as an essential teaching resource, UMAG has expanded its collection and programming through generous donations from patrons and artists, along with support from the University of Hong Kong and the HKU Museum Society. Since 1953, curators and educators have leveraged this assistance to expand, display and teach with a collection that highlights artefacts ranging from Neolithic cultures (ca. 6500 BCE–ca. 1900 BCE) to the early kingdoms and dynasties of imperial China (ca. 1500 BCE–1911). UMAG has also gained a reputation f

This is how a Chinese proverb goes, “It takes a long way to tell how strong a horse is; it takes a long time to know a person well.” Yet, the Chinese also developed a set of rules to know a person simply by observation – read first his face and palm, then his gesture and demeanour for his intelligence and his luck. If you’re interested in knowing a person by just looking, this book is an indispensable read: - Is she/he the perfect wife or husband? Is he pretending to be rich, but is actually a less-privileged working class? Is he a sex fiend or a shameless con man? They are giving it away on their face and with their gestures. - What is your boss thinking? How do you tell if a subordinate is loyal? Which of the workers is the most competent? Simply take a look and you’d know. - Read both the face and the palm to tell his/her love luck and if his/her marriage is good or bad. - A mole, a zit, the voice, the hair and the way a person walks are all essential clues to tell his/her luck.

In this region, medium streams sloppily freeze, except before an imminent severe snowstorm. — LIFE AND DEATH OF SNOW Originally written back in 1991, the first half, five short stories, remains special, being inspired by experiences of growing up, travel, and interactions with the animal world, even the eponymous centipede did exist! As for the poems (written circa 1978 – 86), some of these were motivated by the Sino-British talks and Hong Kong’s uncertain future, not to mention the astronomical interest associated with another group gripped by the enthusiasm aroused by planetary exploration. The others turn over themes of nature and life. Note: In the first story, the region depicted has been administratively incorporated into the new Uonuma city. Slow business has led to shorter ski season and the shutting of lesser-known ski grounds.

The Dark Side 2: Day Zero and Other Stories is a mix of stories, dividing broadly between six’horror’ stories and six’thriller’ stories. Horror stories often fill us with dread and show us a much darker side of human behaviour. At the same time, they can be funny and satirical. The other six stories are more varied. Some are thrillers where the main aim is to excite the reader. Some like’Auto Message’ try to say something about how technology is affecting our daily lives. Others like’The Curse’ try to show us, in a humorous way, how greedy people could be. The great thing about stories is that they carry us into another world on top of helping us to learn words, parts of speech and sentence construction. If we dive into the pool of good stories, we’ll learn how to swim – using those good examples in our own writing.

This book is for readers who are interested in literature, visual arts and writings about life. Most of the time, life itself, including personal ones and collective ones (such as nation, natural environment and so forth), gives incredible inspirations to the one who is writing. And yet, through more reading and more thinking, the writing self can imagine someone else’s way of living, as if he or she is living through it. This collection of essays brings literature and visual arts together, as their aesthetics come to complete each other. 本書特色 A collection of essays that explores the intricate relationships between literature and art, bringing new insights into famous writers such as Henry James and Virginia Woolfe.
