Posthuman Knowledge and the Critical Posthumanities

出版日:2025/04/22 作者:Rosi Braidotti  出版社:Sternberg Press  裝訂:平裝
On the advanced knowledge economy, which perpetuates patterns of discrimination and exclusion, and the threat of climate change devastation for both human and nonhuman entities.Robots designed to care for people and neglected landscapes of digital trash. The promise of synthetic biology and the panic of living on a dying planet. Wonderful feats of intelligence and systemic acts of violence. Exhilaration and exhaustion. Rosi Braidotti argues that we must think about these apparent contradictions all together in order to make differences that actually matter.Posthuman Knowledge and the Critical Posthumanitiesoscillates between evocations and transections of contemporary conditions, for which Braidotti offers what she calls the “posthuman convergence” as a new paradigm for situating and navigating their problems and possibilities. Reflecting on the knotted situation of the academic humanities, cognitive capitalism, and advanced climate change, she delivers an intersectional critique of hu

Studio Experimentelles Design’s politically and socially committed approach through lectures, research, conversations, and project documentation. With today’s increasing income disparity, forced global division of labor, and neoliberal expansion of precariousness, a critical discussion about work is looming―even in the field of design. Since 2011, the Studio Experimentelles Design at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg has experimented with local design support as a contemporary practice. The student-led program advocates a community-based, cooperative approach to design. In the summer of 2020, the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin Design Lab #6 hosted Studio Experimentelles Design’s online research festival “(How) do we (want to) work (together) (as (socially engaged) designers (students and neighbours)) (in neoliberal times)?” The studio invited friends, experts, and activists to discuss self-organizing academia, artistic collectivism, care work, and creative self-exploitation. Alternative forms of curatorial and institutional work suitable to our novel conditions, when the relationship between physical and online work must be revised.Never before has the entire world been caught up nearly simultaneously in such a similar experience as in this era of the pandemic, which has only accelerated the spiraling crises of our time. The experiences that artists and curators now address, and even the very sense of experience itself, are more situated than local, extending beyond demarcated localities and individual communities, and resonating in precise yet expanded contexts of culture, space, and time. This book proposes alternative forms of curatorial and institutional work suitable to our novel conditions, when the relationship between physical and online work must be revised in the name of a new sense of the situated, and as various economies of solidarity are already developing. The predominant forms of curatorial production (exhibitions, conferences, publications

An attempt to feel and investigate the quality of time, with references to Jonathan Crary, Paul B. Preciado, Charles Baudelaire, and Walter Benjamin. “This book could have been called The Contemporary Condition of Sleeping and Reading in the Heart of (and in Spite of) the Logosphere and Various Media Streams, but frankly, I Can’t Sleep sounds better, plus it’s true.”―Lionel Ruffel The diaristic form of I Can't Sleep is an attempt to feel and investigate the quality of time, making reference to Jonathan Crary, Bernard Stiegler, Yves Citton, Paul B. Preciado, Charles Baudelaire, and above all Walter Benjamin. Written in a style that borrows not from classical forms of theory or prose, but operates in between fiction and nonfiction to investigate the very concept of the contemporary, I Can't Sleep uses a quite old but often renewed method―in this sense a very contemporary one―consisting of starting from one’s own personal situation.

Valerie Solanas’s legendary play explodes social and sexual mores and the hypocritical, patriarchal culture that produces.Valerie Solanas’s legendary play, Up Your Ass―never published during her lifetime but full of her signature irreverence and wit, incisiveness, and camp―explodes social and sexual mores and the hypocritical, patriarchal culture that produces them. The play, the full title of which is Up Your Ass Or From the Cradle to the Boat Or The Big Suck Or Up from the Slime, marches out a cast of screwy stereotypes: the unknowing john, the frothy career girl, the boring male narcissist, two catty drag queens, the sex-depraved housewife, and a pair of racialized pickup artists, among others. At the center is protagonist Bongi Perez―a thinly veiled Solanas―a sardonic, gender-bending hustler who escorts us through the back alleys of her street life. The fictionalized predecessor to SCUM Manifesto, the play shares the same grand, subversive, implicative language, equally spitting an

An unnamed woman―a mother―struggles to survive in the face of state repression, neighborhood surveillance, extreme weather, and familial control.Alienation and dire frustration mount as an unnamed woman―a mother―struggles to survive in the face of state repression, neighborhood surveillance, extreme weather, and familial control. Told through one side of an epistolary exchange, Custody of the Eyes (Los Vigilantes) presents letters bookended by dense ramblings by the mother’s son, who struggles to speak and write and spends most of his days in lockdown rearranging his “vessels,” hysterically laughing, drooling, writhing, and withdrawing―a state that will ultimately consume his mother as well. This is a story that explores how power is enacted on and through the body―the physical, the social, and the political. Custody of the Eyes reconfirms the essential, constitutive nature of language and expression in power and freedom.

Following the “emerging life adventures and experiences” of Sophia, a robot animated by blockchain and AI, to present a study in temporal automation. In what way do the two technologies of blockchain and artificial intelligence actualize and, crucially, automatize the cognition of time? These kinds of machines are increasingly part of both our contemporary present and our prospective future, but how do we really define a present and a future? And more important, how do these machines themselves understand, know, and sense time? Can machines really think about the present and dream the future in an autonomous way? In order to unravel these questions, Whose Time Is It? follows the “emerging life adventures and experiences” of Sophia, a robot animated by blockchain and AI, to present a study in temporal automation.

Forty-one thoughtful and generous contributions by artists, scholars, scientists, and ocean activists in response to the rapidly changing oceans. The ocean is rising and with it sea level, water temperature, acidity, algal blooms, and storm surges. Also on the rise are the metrics of accelerated human activity. How are we to fathom the political, aesthetic, and epistemological rise of the oceans from centuries-long invisibilization and forgetting? What ideas and memories do the oceans hold in their depth and reanimate, when the earth’s ecosystems suffer? Asking different questions and using multiple registers of sensing expand the possibilities to engage with the oceanic at this precarious moment and rethink its relations to the terrestrial. Oceans Rising is a companion reader to “Territorial Agency: Oceans in Transformation,” an independent oceanic research initiative commissioned by TBA21–Academy and operating out of Ocean Space in Venice. It offers forty-one thoughtful contribution

Amazonia as a place, a subject, a point of view, and a socio-ecological world.Amazonia: Anthology as Cosmology is devoted to Amazonia, its peoples, allies, and nonhuman spirits, and their myriad material and immaterial practices, from certain cosmopolitics and visual languages to past and present forms of resistance. In all their various lines (and circles) of ecological and epistemological thought, the artists, elders, writers, theorists, shamans, curators, poets, and activists whose ideas, images, and struggles compose this book, are concerned with Amazonia as both a place and a point of view. Through the weaving of voices, myths, ancestors, and territories, and all their radical subjectivities, we understand language in this anthology in an extended sense: as testimony, textile, painting, river, forest, animal, ancestor, song, spirit, and sacred medicine. Amazonia: Anthology as Cosmology inquires into decolonial feminisms and Indigenous temporalities, externalized memory and erasure

Curating Capitalism

出版日:2022/02/01 作者:Pierre Guillet De Monthoux  出版社:Sternberg Press  裝訂:平裝
How art impacts management, drawing from stories told by internationally known contemporary curators, artists, critics, and philosophers. Curating has evolved into much more than creating interesting exhibitions, promoting artists, and selling artwork. Art worlds have fused with business worlds and transformed capitalism from the inside out. To "curate capitalism" implies new ways of management that go far beyond the simple commercialization of art and artist. Today, art and the artist inspire business. While some of Curating Capitalism can be traced back to the German Artist Joseph Beuys’ declaration that Art=Capital and American Andy Warhol’s vision of a capitalistic "Business Art," it takes the insights of independent curators to upscale and intellectually articulate these ideas.

The first monograph on artist and filmmaker Leslie Thornton: essential, foundational scholarship on her influential work in film and video.Produced on the occasion of a major solo exhibition of Leslie Thornton at the MIT List Visual Arts Center, as well as a recent solo exhibition at Kunstverein Nurnberg, this richly illustrated volume will be the first monograph on this important artist and filmmaker, and offers essential, foundational scholarship on Thornton’s influential work in film and video. Thornton’s early encounters with experimental, structuralist, and cinéma vérité traditions fueled her iconoclastic take on the moving image and gave shape to her practice of weaving together her own footage and voice with archival film and audio. In part through her forceful and dynamic use of sound, Thornton exposes the limits of language and vision in her works, while acknowledging the ways that language and vision nevertheless remain central to scientific discourse and narrative in gener

The revisioning of our infrastructural futures, local and global relationalities, and historical and political legacies. From questions around space settlements to the possibility of repurposing blockchain infrastructures and financial instruments for redistributive purposes, and from the diagrammatic potential of infrastructural thinking in artistic practices to scenario planning and economic strategizing, this collection of essays brings together critical analysis from a broad group of contributors engaged in the revisioning of our infrastructural futures. Their interrogations span local and global relationalities, historical and political legacies, as well as future-oriented infrastructural hypotheses. Forming a comprehensive picture of the multiple processes, regulations, institutions, technologies, networks, and operations that we have come to understand as the distributed infrastructural arena in which we act, yield, and plot is a perennial challenge. Examining how we map and experience landscapes and airspace in conceptual, geopolitical, neuropsychological, and ecological terms, the book investigates how research-led practices in the arts can develop legal frameworks for understanding the future of digital technologies and their relationship to airspace. Exploring the impact of individual and societal amnesia on the cultural, historical, and construction of landscape and place, Lesions in the Landscape investigates the complex interaction between memory and forgetting. Generating aesthetic and critical discourses about the dynamics of spatial politics, cultural erasure, and our capacity to imagine the future, this ongoing investi
