These two sections together discuss Constituent Assembly, interim government, various political alternatives and developments, the civil disobedience movements organized by Muslim League in various parts of the country. It also examines communalism in provinces, the demand for partition in Punjab and Bengal as well as the role of the last viceroy, volunteer organizations and the problem of refugees and minority groups. The introduction by Sucheta Mahajan situates the movements in the historical context and underlines their importance in the politics of the year 1947.

Sucheta Mahajan is a professor at the Centre for Historical Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
Sabyasachi Bhattacharya is former Chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research.
