To the Masses ─ Proceedings of the Third Congress of the Communist International, 1921

More than 600 delegates from 55 countries gathered for the Congress to grapple with the decline in support for communism among workers in Europe. The many viewpoints expressed are generally grouped into those aiming to galvanize workers into revolutionary struggles and those aiming to anchor the movement in the daily struggles of the working class. The decisions taken have shaped revolutionary action into the 21st century. They include seeking to win over a majority of workers by engaging in workers' daily struggles, drawing together diverse anti-capitalist forces into a united front, and nibbling away at the edges of capitalist property rights and power. John Riddell has translated and edited eight volumes of documents of the Communist movement in the era of the Russian revolution, such asToward the United Front: Proceedings of the Fourth Congress of the Communist International, 1922 (Brill, 2012). A further Brill volume now in preparation will complete this ambitious project.
