Excavations At Mendes

This handsome volume contains the final report of the excavations led by Redford (classics and ancient Mediterranean studies, Pennsylvania State U.) in 1992-1995, when he directed a team from the U. of Toronto. Redford has written chapters that describe the site, including its walls; the sarcophagus of Nepherites I (founder of the 29th Egyptian Dynasty); his tomb, its decoration, and inscriptions; later inscriptions; and a catalog of objects from the tomb. Other archaeologists from the excavation have contributed detailed chapters on the ceramics, human remains, charred plant and faunal remains, and the basket-handle jars. The volume, which is oversized at 8.5x12", is heavily illustrated with b&w drawings and diagrams and 37 plates of b&w photos of the site and its objects. Donald B. Redford, MA, Ph.D. (Toronto), FRSC is Professor of Classics & Ancient Mediterranean Studies at the Pennsylvania State University. He has published widely on Egyptian History and Archaeology, including Egypt, Canaan and Israel in Ancient Times (Princeton, 1992) and The Wars in Syria and Palestine of Thutmose III (Leiden, 2003).
