本書選擇初中學生比較熟悉的生活題材，通過形式多樣的訓練練習，培養學生的口頭表達能力。全書由20個單元組成，每個單元覆蓋了一個與初中學生平時學習相關的、以《英語課程標準》5級為基本要求的題材以及所涉及的相關內容，如：節假日、做客、購物、旅遊、求醫等20個主題。
每個單元中設計了形式多樣、風格不同的口語訓練活動和訓練任務，活動按照“任務型為基礎”的教學原理，形式上力求活潑生動，實用性強，貼近生活，充分激發學生在生活中靈活運用語言的興趣，從而提高他們的語言運用能力。
