O Compromisso da Irmandade da Santa Casa da Misericordia de Macau de 1893

The publication of this 1893 Commitment of the Mercy of Macau concluded a prolonged process of reform and confraternal updating of the Macanese Holy House. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the main supporting activities of the Mercy are profoundly altered by the political, economical and social transformations. At the same time, a recurring difficulty is registered, which makes it difficult for the old confraternity to continue to carry forward its statuary mission, through mobilizing social help and the fundamental economical funds. Placed under a strong principle of reorganization and reform of the Mercy of Macau, the 1893 Commitment constitutes a normative element based on the historical life of the Macanese Holy House, which is responsible for restructuring a confraternal experience, which after continuous crises in the advent of contemporaneity was able to recover a space, which is still important today in social assistance and protection.
