Endobronchial Ultrasonography

For pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, and bronchoscopists, Kurimoto (chest surgery, St. Marianna U., Japan) et al. describe endobronchial ultrasonography (EBUS) as a tool for the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer and other thoracic diseases. They review the principles of ultrasound and its application in thoracic medicine, then summarize mediastinal anatomy, the basic technique of needle aspiration of lymph nodes, and how to perform endobronchial ultrasound guided transbronchial aspiration. They then discuss the use of peripheral ultrasound for the localization of pulmonary nodules and the role of endobronchial ultrasound in interventional pulmonology, showing the correlation of EBUS images with the histology and pathology of mediastinal lymph nodes and pulmonary nodules.
