Linear Algebra: Theory and Applications

In their introductory textbook, Cheney and Kincaid (both U. of Texas-Austin) include practical matters of interest to students in science, engineering, and business; and theoretical matters for students of mathematics. They keep the style elementary, to accommodate students who are not necessary advanced in mathematics, and include many examples to illustrate complex concepts. There is enough material to leave instructors some elbow room, they say. No date is cited for the first edition; the second has incorporated errors pointed out in the first, and added more exercise so that all sections have at least 50 general and five computer exercises. The topics are systems of linear equations, vector spaces, matrix operations, determinants, vector subspaces, eigensystems, inner-product vector spaces, and additional topics.
