This volume collects and translates writings by Islamist thinkers from the Arab world in order to provide an understanding of contemporary Islamism beyond the one-dimensional caricature often found in Western writings about the movement. Editor Aub-Rabi' has organized the 33 essays, 18 translated into English here for the first time, into sections concerned with general theoretical debates within Islamism; Islamism, jihad, and martyrdom; Islamism and the question of Israel/Palestine; trends and self-criticism within contemporary Islamism; Islamism, the West, the United States, and 9/11; and Islamism in the contemporary Arab world.
