The Military Orders: Welfare and Warfare

From the second in a series of conferences, held in September 1992 in London, 33 papers explore diverse aspects of the orders from their appearance in the 12th century into the early 19th. Among them are Arabic medicine and hospitals in the Middle Ages as a probably model for the military orders' care of the sick, horses and crossbows as warfare advantages of the Teutonic Order in Prussia, Templar castles between Jaffa and Jerusalem, the sargents of the military order of Santiago, the Hospitallers and the Kings of Navarre in the 14th and 15th centuries, and the Bailiwick of Brandenberg and the Prussian monarchy in 1701-1810. Jochen Schenk is a lecturer in Medieval History at the University of Glasgow. His recent publications include Templar Families. Landowning Families and the Order of the Temple in France, c.1120-1312, published in 2012. He is also the author of a number of articles dealing, mainly, with the Order of the Templea€?sa€? social structure, the Templarsa€? religious life, and the military ordersa€? contribution to state building in the Latin East. He is currently working on a cultural history of the crusader states. Mike Carr teaches late medieval history at the University of Edinburgh. He has published articles on the relations between Latins, Greeks and Turks in the eastern Mediterranean, the crusades, maritime history and the papacy, and has a monograph forthcoming: Merchant Crusaders in the Aegean, 1291-1352. He is also the co-editor of the volume Contact and Conflict in Frankish Greece and the Aegean, 1204-1453, with Nikolaos Chrissis (Ashgate, 2014).
