All the information required by postgraduates is, however, difficult to gather into a simple form. This book offers the resident in a general hospital, and also senior members of the profession an aide-memoire that complements their undergraduate training. This book presents the more practical aspects of diagnosis and management, mainly in note and tabular form, primarily for staff in hospital positions, but also in community and general dental practice. It covers areas of dentistry that overlap with, or border on, other specialties in the field of medicine and surgery. It includes practical aspects of Oral Medicine and Pathology, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, including Traumatology, and relevant aspects of sedation, anaesthetics, and therapeutics. The most important role of this book is to bridge the gap between undergraduate dental and medical knowledge, allowing the dental professional to be able to take a full medical history, examine the patient, perform the appropriate investigations, appreciate the patient's medical problems and their implications on dental management, and finally enabling them to treat their patients in a safe and effective way.

Crispian Scully is Director of Special Projects at the UCL-Eastman Dental Institute (EDI); Professor of Special Care Dentistry; Chairman of International Federation of Oral Medicine; Past-President of European Association of Oral Medicine; and Vice-President of International Academy of Oral Oncology. He is co-director of the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for oral health, disability and culture, and a member of National Centre for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). He is Visiting Professor at various universities in Europe. He was Dean at EDI 1993-2008, gaining the Queen's Award for Higher and Further Education - the first in dentistry. His book Medical Problems in Dentistry was awarded the Doody Prize; and Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine won the Society of Authors Prize. He has received the CBE, University of Helsinki Medal of Honour, University of Santiago de Compostela Medal, Fellowship of UCL and honorary degrees from the Universities of Athens, Granada and Pretoria.
Athanasios Kalantzis studied dentistry in Athens and became a scholar for postgraduate studies of the Institution of National Scholarships of Greece. He studied Medicine in Sheffield, UK and is a member of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and of the European Association of Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgeons. He is Fellow in Training of the International Academy of Oral Oncology. His clinical experience includes posts in General Dental Practice, Oral Surgery, and Oral Pathology amongst others. He has published research and literature review papers in peer reviewed journals. He has taught junior oral & maxillofacial trainees for several years both informally and formally as demonstrator and lecturer. He has served as Members Rep of the British Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons as well as Officer of the Junior Trainees Group.
