Ageing, Health and Pensions in Europe: An Economic and Social Policy Perspective

This book presents an engaging overview of the future research challenges for economists and social scientists concerning population ageing, pensions, health and social care in Europe. Various experts discuss how scientific research can provide cutting-edge evidence on income security of the elderly, well-being of the elderly, and labour markets and older workers: three themes dominating the current European economic and social policy debate. By adopting a forward-looking approach, the book discusses the remaining knowledge gaps and research opportunities. It also reviews data needs and other infrastructure requirements and explores the implications for research policy.

Lans Bovenberg is Professor of Economics at Tilburg University, the Netherlands. He is founder of the research network Netspar (Network for Studies on Pensions, Aging and Retirement) and has published in the leading international journals on a variety of topics: public economics, tax policy, environmental economics, institutional economics, pensions and ageing, international macro-economics and labour economics.
Arthur Van Soest is Professor of Econometrics at Tilburg University, The Netherlands. He also has an affiliation with the RAND corporation, and has published on micro-econometrics, labour economics, health economics, development economics and the economics of ageing in numerous journals.
Asghar Zaidi is Director Research at the European Centre Vienna and a Research Associate at the Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion, the London School of Economics, UK. Previously, he worked as Senior Economist at OECD, Paris; as Economic Advisor at the Department for Work and Pensions, and as a researcher at London School of Economics and the University of Oxford. He is the Vice-President of the International Microsimulation Association, and has recently published a book on microsimulation modelling.
