Linguistic Fieldwork: A Practical Guide

This book is a practical guide to all aspects of doing linguistic fieldwork. The student is not only taken through how to describe phonetics, phonology, morphology and syntax of language, but other aspects of primary data work are given equal attention, including grant application writing, obtaining ethics clearance, and problems which might arise while in the field. While the focus is on fieldwork on endangered languages spoken in remote communities, the advice will be useful to everyone beginning fieldwork.

CLAIRE BOWERN is Assistant Professor of Linguistics at Rice University, USA and a member of the Australian National University's Centre for Research on Language Change. Her primary areas of research are language documentation/description and historical linguistics, particularly in Northern Australia.
