This book focuses on the neglected cultural front of the Cold War in Asia to explore the mindsets of Asian actors and untangle the complex cultural alliances that undergirded the security blocs on this continent. Our research is based primarily on archival sources, including government documents, diplomatic dispatches, and personal records. Some chapters also investigate architectural designs, novels, newspaper columns, and other writings by important Asian authors. The approaches employed are a mixture of historical, cultural, discourse, and literary analysis. The book can be adopted for graduate seminars on Asian modern history and Cold War history and politics, and will be especially useful to scholars and graduate students in contemporary Asian history (both cultural and political history) and in Cold War studies.
作者簡介
Tuong Vu is Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science, University of Oregon. His interests include the politics of Vietnam and Indonesia, and Southeast Asian comparative politics. In addition to articles in Journal of Southeast Asian Studies, Ab Imperio, Studies in Comparative International Development, Journal of Vietnamese Studies, Theory and Society, Communist and Post-Communist Studies, and South East Asia Research, he is the co-editor (with Erik Kuhonta and Dan Slater) of Southeast Asia in Political Science: Theory, Region and Qualitative Analysis (2008). He is also guest editor (with Ed Miller) of a forthcoming Special Issue of the Journal of Vietnamese Studies about the New Scholarship on the Vietnam War.
Wasana Wongsurawat is Lecturer in modern Chinese history at the Department of History, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok. During 2007-2008, she was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore. Wasana's research interests focus on the history of the overseas Chinese community in Thailand. Her recent publications include, "The Foreign Print Capitalism that Founded a Nation: The Role of Overseas Chinese Newspapers in the Emergence of Thai Nationalism," Journal of Asiatic Studies (vol. 1 no. 3, September 2008), and "Contending for a Claim on Civilization: The Sino-Thai Struggle to Control Overseas Chinese Education in Thailand," Journal of Chinese Overseas (vol. 4 no. 2, November 2008).
