American Paintings at Harvard: Paintings, Watercolors, Pastels, and Stained Glass by Artists Born 1826-1856

This book is the first to be published in a series of three volumes cataloguing Harvard University's distinguished collection of American paintings. It brings to light nearly five hundred significant paintings, watercolors, pastels, and stained-glass windows - many never before published - from the second half of the nineteenth to the early twentieth century.
American Paintings at Harvard features works by Cecilia Beaux, Winslow Homer, John La Farge, John Singer Sargent, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, and Sarah Wyman Whitman, along with numerous less-known but important artists. Entries draw on new research and scholarship, and the catalogue section concludes with the exhibition and publication history of each work, reflecting its early reception as well as later interpretation. Theodore E. Stebbins outlines Harvard's collecting history over three centuries, and an essay by Virginia Raguin introduces Harvard's Memorial Hall and its twenty-one masterworks in stained glass. Included in the book are eighty-three works by artist and museum director Charles Herbert Moore, who played a pivotal role in art education at Harvard.
