This volume developed out of the lecture notes from a course taught by Miron (Harvard U. and the Cato Institute) on "A Libertarian Perspective on Economic and Social Policy." It is organized as an A-to-Z (from "abortion" to "zoos") discussion of capitalist libertarian views on a range of topics primarily but not exclusively relevant to current policy debates within the United States. Other examples of topics discussed by the approximately 100 alphabetical entries include affirmative action, anti-poverty programs, antitrust policy, budget deficits, campaign finance regulation, capital punishment, central banks and monetary policy, consumption taxes, democracy and capitalism, drug prohibition, drunk driving laws, endangered species, externalities, foreign aid, gays in the military, gun control, health care costs, immigration, mandatory savings programs, minimum wages, moral hazard, nuclear power, Pareto efficiency, product liability, public schools, Roe v. Wade, Social Security, sports stadiums, unions, utilitarianism, vouchers for education, and the war on terror. A brief note on the intellectual foundations of the libertarian perspective is included at the end. Annotation c2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
