In 2007, the National Nanotechnology Coordination Office, which oversees the US National Nanotechnology Initiative, asked the National Research Council to review its publication Strategy for Nanotechnology-Related Environmental, Health, and Safety Research. A committee was formed of people with experience in nanotechnology, toxicology, risk and exposure assessment, occupational and public health, and other relevant fields.
