Hit Songs, 1900-1955: American Popular Music of the Pre-Rock Era

This reference lists famous songs from 1900 to 1955, in chronological order, along with information on each. It describes the top hits for each year and how they were created and popularized, including chart information (if available), related recording artists, lyrics, and links to websites that have free recordings. Biographical sketches of composers, lyricists, and performers are presented at the end. Tyler's sources include Variety, Billboard, and the ASCAP All-Time Hit Parade. Portions of the book were published in Tyler's Hit Parade: An Encyclopedia of the Jazz, Depression, Swing and Sing Eras from 1985, and this volume consists of an expanded and re- edited version of it.
