Wright (ecclesiastical history, U. of Leeds, UK) finds event the term "counter-Reformation" to be a 19th-century construct. He argues that both the Reformation and the so-called counter-Reformation were founded on sincere desires to reform, to move closer to the roots of faith, and to build on the patristic revival of the 15th and 16th centuries. He finds, however, significant differences in how the two movements applied and expressed these desires in their respective approaches to science and scholarship, to politics, to empire, and to what, exactly, constituted the life in faith.
