Testing the thesis that the Great Awakening reflected and even issued from a crisis in pastoral care, Harper (Christian history and thought, Asia Graduate School of Theology-Philippines) begins by examining a local precedent for pastoral activism embraced by many New Light pastors among Boston's 11 Congregational churches. Then he focuses on the Great Awakening in Boston as a pastoral phenomenon, and inquires into the words and deeds of local pastors and the demographic health of individual congregations and that of the aggregate Congregational community.
