Zeigler (women's studies, Eastern Kentucky U.) and Gunderson (government, Eastern Kentucky U.) examine the role gender plays in challenging the institutional cultures of the armed services and in shaping their future. They describe how gender integration relates to both to the missions of the armed forces and to the aims of the women's rights movement, and how women in the military understand their experiences and attitudes, especially as future leaders. They examine the combat exclusion policy in the US, and how women in other countries serve. They describe the lessons learned from women working in law enforcement, and address the issues of sexual harassment and rape as a weapon of war. They recommend developing better standards, conscripting women, enforcing equity in promotions, including women in combat, making better efforts to curb sexual harassment, and taking advantage of women's past success in peacekeeping operations.
