Psychoanalysts have a variety of theoretical models from which to choose. Those models have developed to account for various problems and most do so with some degree of success, but all are imperfect. Which should an analyst choose? More important, how should an analyst choose? Practitioner Boesky argues that the theoretical models have surpassed available methods for evaluation and comparison. He proposes a methodology of contextualization that reliably describes the inferential processes analysts use to apply the "best" models and get past disguised meanings of their patients' associations. He gives clinical examples with commentary, detailing when analysts should compare models, how memory recovery as viewed through the one-person (as opposed to the two-person) model works, and which free associations count. From this he builds associations and interpretations, contextualization and a system of hermeneutics. Annotation c2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
