商品簡介
China's "floating population" comprises some one million peasants who, having slipped through the constraints of China's household registration system, live in urban communities and have considerable impact on commerce and society. In this revision of her PhD thesis, Zhang (anthropology, University of California-Davis) offers a detailed ethnographic account of the construction, destruction, and reconstruction of the largest migrant community in Beijing. She focuses on the informal privatization of space and power in this community, analyzing the ways migrant leaders build their power base by controlling housing and market spaces and creating social networks. Contemporary b&w photos are included. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
