A Desirable Station, Soldier Life at Fort Mackinac, 1867-1895 is the story of more than 1,000 soldiers from around the world who worked, played, lived and loved at the fort perched high on the cliffs of Mackinac Island. Some won honors, and some did jail time, but all served during the final chapter of one of America's great forts; built during the American Revolution, attacked during the War of 1812, fortified to protect the commerce of John Jacob Astor's fur business and finally given new life with the creation of Mackinac National Park in 1875. The soldiers arriving on Mackinac Island during this time found a place rapidly changing from a strategic military post into a premier tourist destination. Drill and fatigue duties were light; fear of attack was slight; modern conveniences abounded and the burgeoning resort community beckoned soldiers who had liberal amounts of free time. Lieutenant Calvin D. Cowles spoke for many of his fellow soldiers when he arrived at Mackinac Island and deemed it a "desirable station."
Suitable for small or large groups, the Catholic Biblical School Program is a four-year, comprehensive study of scripture that covers every book of the Bible from a Catholic perspective.
The program is based on contemporary research by Catholic scholars in the field of biblical studies but also incorporates and respects an ecumenical approach to the study of scripture.
Year Two-New Testament Foundations Jesus and Discipleship---introduces the writings of the New Testament. It begins with an examination of the formation of the gospels and the unique viewpoint of each evangelist. It then examines the nature of St. Paul's letters and their profound theology of the risen Christ. It concludes with the study of the special approach of John's Gospel, the Johannine letters, and the Book of Revelation.
"This program provides the most complete course of study available of the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. It leads the student through clear and easy-to-follow steps, with many helpful readings and study aids. At the end of the four-year program, a student will be well-versed in every book of the Bible and competent to teach others in parish bible programs or to lead bible study groups. There is nothing like it!"---Lawrence Broadt, CSP, Professor Emeritus of Scripture, Washington Theological Union
