Cleveland officially retired from the history department at Simon Fraser University just weeks before he died of leukemia in September 2006. His textbook for students and general readers was first published in 1994 and revised in 2000 and 2004 to incorporate subsequent events. Bunton (history, U. of Victoria) takes the helm here, recognizing the continued unraveling of the Oslo peace process; the development Islamist movements in Turkey, Iran, Egypt, and Lebanon; and the intensification of diplomatic and military unilateralism in the region by the US. Geographically, the scope reaches from Egypt east to Iran and from Turkey south to the Arabian Peninsula; chronologically it begins in the late 18th century and extends to the 21st, though the first chapter reviews the region's history since the advent of Islam. The late William L. Cleveland was professor of history at Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, Vancouver, British Columbia.
Martin Bunton is an associate professor of history at the University of Victoria, British Columbia. He is the author of Colonial Land Policies in Palestine, 1917–1936 (2007).
