Data are given on areas such as national and fiscal accounts, exchange rates, Millennium Development Goals, private sector development, human development, diseases, agricultural, labor, and migration. Commentary and interpretation sections shed light on corruption in Africa, such as absentee teachers in public schools and absentee doctors in public clinics, fertilizer and hospital supplies stolen or diluted, and the effect of corruption on local populations and the progress of development for the region. The CD-ROM contains data on about 1,600 macroeconomic, sectoral, and social indicators in 53 African countries. Time series include data from 1961 to 2008. A few macro indicators have provisional data for 2008, and other indicators have data for 2008-10. The software platform features enhanced mapping and charting, a choice of data selection techniques, and different display options. The book will be useful for analysts and policy makers.
