商品簡介
Focusing on the experiences of Singapore's Indian minority during the periods in which the Straits Settlements functioned as an Indian presidency, 1825-1867, and as a penal settlement for transported Indian convicts, 1825-1873, Pieris (U. of Melbourne, Australia) argues that colonial Singapore's plural political system, aimed at managing diverse ethnic communities, was first imagined and tested through the colonial prison. In examining this history of physical and social divisions and their relationship to colonialism, political formations, and conceptions of subjecthood, Pieris engages with postcolonial studies and with M. M. Bakhtin's notion of dialogism as applied to architecture and urbanism. Annotation c2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
