Vincent Van Gogh Painted With Words: The Letters to Emile Bernard

This groundbreaking publication comprises all of the extant letters from one of the greatest modern artists - Vincent van Gogh - to his younger colleague Emile Bernard. Nineteen of the twenty-two letters were previously in private hands and have not been seen for approximately seventy years. In 2001, these nineteen letters were acquired by collector Eugene Thaw and made a promised gift to The Morgan Library & Museum, New York. They are being published in association with the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, and the Morgan, where they are to be exhibited for the first time. In addition to the correspondence, this highly focused study also includes paintings and drawings by both artists as well as works by such artists as Rembrandt, Eugene Delacroix, Paul Gauguin, and Jean-Francois Millet.
The authors have carefully contextualized each letter and have provided authoritative commentaries on their content.
