Through analysis of their significant texts, Orwin (Russian literature, U. of Toronto) closely examines the three founding members of the Russian school of psychological realism to ascertain their perceptions of the self and subjectivity. She examines the origins of self-consciousness as a national trait of the Russian literary tradition, then examines the traits of each, such as Dostoevsky's hidden author and Tolstoy's use of Turgenevian moments. She includes considerations of romantic longing in Turgenev and Dostoevsky's critique of him, the world of the child in Dickens as well as Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, and the psychology of evil as a subjective element. In essence, Orwin describes how the three communicated to each other through their works, a fascinating study.
