Countering the widely held view that many Egyptians were enamored of fascism during the years leading up to World War II, historians Gershoni (U. of Tel Aviv) and Jankowski (U. of Colorado-Boulder) draw from Egyptian periodicals of the period to argue that liberal ideas about both politics and society continued to be expressed by intellectuals and publicists.
