In the 1960s and 1970s, Jim Marshall granted the public something it never had before: access to the most personal, unguarded moments of the great musicians of the time. Marshall shares his working contact sheets that include the never-before-seen shots that shared the film rolls of the famous single selections. What results is a visual narrative preceding and following those well-known decisive moments from the legendary sittings, concerts, and sessions, the iconic images of their era.
Jim Marshall: Proof collects over sixty proof sheets, shown in their entirety, each facing the hero print from that roll. Revealing a wealth of details, the sheets include the shots that Marshall took just before and after the photographs we now celebrate. Many of the other shots are remarkable in their own right, displaying Marshall's sustained talent for capturing the essence of his subjects.
Not limited to the famous images of musicians and counterculture of the 1960s and 1970s, Proof also includes little-known pictures of other figures of arts and letters - Elia Kazan, Woody Allen, William Saroyan, Shelley Berman, among them.
