In recognition of the fact that the St. James River and its tributaries have been a central feature of the cultural landscape of the Florida peninsula throughout history, it was declared an American heritage River in 1998. O'Connor (emerita, art history, Sante Fe College) and Monroe (fine arts and photography, Daytona State College) survey the geographic flow of the river and river-generated human activities. Highlighting the book is their outstanding collection of 199 river-related images (some in full-page color) including Native American artifacts and crafts, paintings by 19th century artists (e.g., Thomas Moran's depiction of Ponce de Leon in Florida searching for the mythical fountain of youth) and contemporary artists including Andrew Wyeth. 作者簡介
Mallory M. O'Connor is professor emerita of art history at Santa Fe College, the past director of the Santa Fe College Art Gallery, and the former visual arts coordinator for the Thomas Center Gallery in Gainesville. She is the author of Lost Cities of the Ancient Southeast. Gary Monroe, professor of fine arts and photography at Daytona State College, is the author of numerous best-selling books, including Silver Springs: The Underwater Photography of Bruce Mozert and The Highwaymen Murals: Al Black's Concrete Dreams.
