Seccombe (community health, Portland State U.) and Hoffman (public health and preventative medicine, Oregon Health & Science U., Portland) report findings of a study of 500-plus families in Oregon, conducted between 2002 and 2003, examining health, insurance, and access to health care among families leaving welfare for work. Coverage includes the health status and changes of participants in the study, challenges for respondents in maintaining health insurance, why the American tradition of employer-sponsored insurance fails for so many people, other access and barriers to health care, how respondents did or did not use the health care system over the course of the year, and the degree of worry respondents reported regarding access to health care. The authors conclude that for welfare policies to succeed, fundamental human needs such as the provision of health insurance must be addressed.
