Conde (emerita French and Romance philology, Columbia U., New York) conducts a sustained reflection on the productive and critical limits of post-colonial theory, argues Fulton (French studies, Smith College). She shows how the Guadeloupe-born French novelist challenges the various lenses through which her texts are read as Caribbean, Third World, feminist and so on, by presenting studies in cultural indeterminacy, temporal incoherence, and epistemological differentiation.
