The author recounts his experiences as a young man from Yugoslavia during World War II and its immediate aftermath. Although the first year of occupation found him engaged with the underground partisans, the majority of his time in the war was spent in an Italian concentration camp and later at Auschwitz and other German concentration camps. He is also extremely critical of the years under Soviet rule, which ended for him upon his emigration to the United States in 1950, a point in time that also marks the end of his memoir.
