In `interview society' the conduct of interviews is routinely used in order to give access to facts and experiences. The research interview is in with the brick and mortar of qualitative research, and is one of the most frequently used methods of obtaining knowledge of individuals, groups and organizations.

Researchers conducting interviews in the social sciences quickly find that there is no single best way to approach their task. This text offers a critique of traditional interviewing practices and provides a framework for thinking about issues such as trustworthiness, identity and language in a conceptual rather than technical context, supporting the development of a reflexive practice, clarifying the problems and possibilities of the use of interviews.

Through the use of eight original metaphors drawing on social and behavioural theory, this cutting-edge text will encourage a questioning of the interpretive nature and theoretical underpinnings not only of uses of the interview method, but of the knowledge which is conveyed through it. The book also offers ideas for how to do interviews innovatively, use data in more rigorous and thoughtful ways and ask novel research questions.

作者簡介

Mats Alvesson is at the Department of Business Administration at Lund University and is also associated with the University of Queensland. He has published extensively on qualitative and reflexive methods, including Reflexive Methodology (with Kaj Skoldberg, SAGE, 2009, 2nd edn), Postmodernism and Social Research (Open University Press, 2002) and Doing Critical Management Research (with Stan Deetz, SAGE, 2000).
