Barry Long was a western guru - meaning that he has all the wisdom and knowledge of a Sage from India but also lived as an ordinary man in the materialist, pressurised West. When he started teaching publicly in London in 1982, there were few if any other western teachers of truth - and none who did not claim some eastern lineage. To announce his presence he issued statements from time to time, which were distributed as leaflets with titles such as 'A Way of Truth for the West' , 'I am Guru. Who are you?'and 'A Way of Love for the West'. These advertised the fact that mystical truth could be spoken by a seemingly ordinary man, who was 'one of us'. But the very idea was in those days unheard of, even outrageous. Barry Long was a pioneer, ahead of his time. Now many have followed in his footsteps, notably Eckhart Tolle who was at one time his student.
