Originally published in Armenian as Butrinti dhe fortifikmet e tij (Tirana 1984), this archaeological study of the military fortifications of the ancient city of Butrint is important for two reasons. Firstly, written by a pre-eminent scholar of Albania's fortifications, already well known for his 5000 Years of Fortifications in Albania, it served as the basis for future studies of the city's military architecture following its publication. Secondly, it demonstrates how communist Albania used archaeology as a means to justify its self-imposed isolation and self-reliance through the propagation of view of an ethnically, culturally, and socially unbroken succession from the ancient Illyrians down to modern Albanians.
