The Spurs of James J. Wheat, Pioneer Collector is more than a beautiful book of spur photos. The author provides information for spur aficionados and collectors, alike. He gives pointers on what makes a good collection, how to tell one spur maker from another by examining his work, and how the days of just "acquiring spurs" as a piece of working gear evolved into collectors paying thousands of dollars for the spurs of their favorite craftsmen or a certain regional style. The book also shows what influenced the creation of Texas Style spurs and what caused some of the makers to design as they did. All this through the examination of one man's collection - the late West Texas oilman James J. Wheat of Loving County, a pioneer spur acquirer with the means for the best.
