Fuels and Combustion

A chemical engineer now retired from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Sarker was asked to provide a third edition of the textbook that was first published in 1974 and again in 1990. Among other revisions, he has incorporated the most recent data on global reserves and consumption of fuels around the world. After an overview and an explanation of definitions, units, and measures, he covers solid fuels, processing solid fuels, liquid fuels, gaseous fuels, the stoichiometry and thermodynamics of the combustion process, the kinetics of the combustion process, and combustion appliances. He is primarily concerned with coal and petroleum, but also considers biomass and peat, and liquid fuels from other sources. End-of-chapter questions are provided. Samir Sarkar is Retired Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Mumbai. He received his doctorate from Kharkov Institute of Technology, USSR, where he was a UNESCO fellow. Professor Sarkar has also worked as a scientist at Bose Institute, Kolkata, and the Central Fuel Research Institute, Dhanbad, Bihar. He has published several technical papers in the areas of coal and petroleum with emphasis on carbonization, hydrogenation and gasification.
