This collection explores the widespread cultural fascination with motherhood in the U.S., focusing on how mothers are portrayed in both mainstream and independent films. Essays deal with the broad themes of how a cinematic focus on the pregnant body both contains and (sometimes) liberates female characters; how the mother-daughter relationship is used to regulate female sexuality; and how mothers are presented as a source of horror or as a scapegoat for broad cultural anxieties. Using a variety of critical approaches, contributors consider the spectacle of pregnancy; mother-daughter relationships; mothers as predators, narcissists, and absent victims; and the ways in which cultural anxieties are displaced and projected onto marginalized mothers. This book is an ideal text for classes in women's studies or film studies, and will appeal to non-academic readers interested in film and feminism.
