Cheng (communication, Santa Clara U.) analyzes the experiences of people in a Chinese and Taiwanese community on the US-Mexico border to understand the process of creating identity. She uses a critical ethnographic approach to examine the area of Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, and El Paso, Texas, and the Asian immigrants who traveled to factories there or lived in the cities. Drawing from interviews and participatory observation, she describes how they actively constructed their identities through their cultural practices, everyday interactions, and participation in activities.
