Halifax lawyer Monty Collins and the Irish-American priest Father Brennan Burke first crossed paths when Burke was charged with the murder of two young women. Against the odds, Monty successfully defended his client, tracked down the real killer, and found a true friend in Father Burke - all in a day's work for Montague Collins, barrister, solicitor, bluesman and perpetual suitor to his estranged wife, Maura.
Monty deserves a holiday, so he jumps at the chance to take Maura and the kids on a trip to New York City with Father Burke. Monty hopes the excursion will rekindle the flames of marital passion. For Burke, the trip is a return home to officiate at a family wedding, but more importantly a chance to explore his own father's past.
Declan Burke fled Ireland forty years ago for New York and never looked back. He thought his past was buried in the old country for good, until he reads the obituary of one Cathal Murphy. The obituary, he understands at once, is a coded indictment of Declan's own life and an announcement of his impending death.
A burst of gunfire at the family wedding underscores the veiled threat in the obituary, and puts Monty's romantic ambitions on hold. But he and Maura put their differences aside to probe the insinuations in the obit, namely the allusions to Declan's IRA past. The investigation, however, is hampered by Declan who - good soldier to the end - maintains the silence of the grave.
