A public school counselor in Fresno, California, Mouavangsou explains that like many refugee groups, the Hmong have significantly altered their traditional practices since they arrived in the US, and she looks at the marriage ceremony rituals as a case study of a practice that has changed more than many. She conducted a qualitative study using semi-structured face-to-face and telephone interviews with people born in Laos but raised and educated in the US about factors that have affected changes in the ceremony. That group was thought to be familiar with both traditional and American ways. Among the factors she found are a lack of the required time and money, lack of knowledge, religion, mixed race marriages, and the shift from collective to individualist thinking.
