Ranging between critical and supportive, 18 papers examine the legal, ethical, social, and psychological issues arising from the current wave of "sexual predator" laws in the United States. Presented by Winick (U. of Miami School of Law) and La Fond (U. of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law), the papers first summarize the laws, the policy perspectives behind them, and the state of knowledge sexual offender risk and treatment modalities. They then turn their attention to varying perspectives on the recent Supreme Court decision ( Kansas v. Hendricks ) that allows for the civil commitment of sexual offenders after they have served their criminal sentences. Other strategies, such as offender registration, chemical castration, and preventive treatment are also critically examined. Annotation (c) Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
